In celebration of World Wildlife Day, Browns Hotels & Resorts recently launched its first ever Naturalist Training Program at Hotel Sigiriya, aimed to inspire local youth towards more responsible environmental stewardship. Teaming up with the experts from the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation, the innovative 3-month program, led by seasoned experts in zoology and wildlife management from the Sigiriya Divisional Zone, will seamlessly blend classroom learning with hands-on field experience for participants.

Suhan Malinda, Zoologist and Ranger from Sigiriya, kicked off his inaugural lesson with an engaging exploration of the Asian Elephant. The lesson ended with an exciting Safari to Hurulu Eco Park, where participants had the opportunity to witness the majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Through immersive field training and firsthand encounters, students gained a deeper appreciation for the complexities of elephant behavior and conservation efforts.

“The Naturalist Training Program is an initiative that embodies Browns Hotels & Resorts’ commitment to sustainability and community empowerment. By equipping local youth with the necessary skills and knowledge, it not only nurtures a profound appreciation for wildlife but also paves the way for rewarding careers in the tourism and hospitality sectors.” said Shehan Gregory, General Manager of Hotel Sigiriya.”

Future lessons for the program will delve into detailed studies on Sri Lanka’s migrant birds, an exploration of the fascinating world of endemic animals in the region such as Gray Slender Loris (Loris lydekkerianus) and even venturing into night trekking adventures.
