Who Might You Encounter?
- Blue Whales: Mirissa is renowned for sighting these colossal marine mammals, offering a rare opportunity to witness the largest animals on Earth up close. Blue whales look true blue underwater, but on the surface their coloring is more a mottled blue-gray.
- Sperm Whales: They have the largest brain of any creature known to have lived on Earth. Their heads also hold large quantities of a substance called spermaceti. Sperm whales are known to dive as deep as 3,280 feet in search of squid to eat. These giant mammals must hold their breath for up to 90 minutes on such dives.
- Bryde’s Whales: These medium-sized whales, known for their sleek appearance and unique feeding behaviors, are frequent visitors to Mirissa’s waters. Bryde’s whales can blow water 10 to 13 feet into the air when at the water’s surface. They sometimes exhale while underwater as well. Additionally, Bryde’s whales can change directions unexpectedly when swimming. They sometimes generate short, powerful sounds that have low frequencies and sound like “moans.”
- Dolphins: Dolphins are small-toothed cetaceans easily recognizable by their curved mouths, which give them a permanent “smile.” An echolocating bottlenose dolphin can make up to a thousand clicking noises per second.

What is the best time to go Whale watching?
Whale watching is definitely for the early birds, so leave the shores at least at 6/6.30 a.m. to ensure a sighting. While you’re at it, you can also enjoy the sunrise from the comfort of your boat!
What precautions should you take
- Avoid seasickness : Learn about what causes seasickness and some tips for easing symptoms here.
- Pack a lunch or favorite snacks : Most boat companies allow you to bring your own food and drinks on board, but glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are usually not allowed. Check with individual businesses first.
- Dress in layers : It’s better to have to remove a layer than to have too few and be cold.
- Don’t forget the sunblock and sunglasses : The sun’s rays are reflected by water. Water glare can make it difficult to see.
Is Whale watching safe?
It is safe as long as you follow your guides instructions and maintain a reasonable distance between yourself and the mammals. Keep safety in mind. Vessels are made of metal, can be slippery if wet, and may move erratically due to ocean forces.
